Surgery

Isaiah went in for his stent removal surgery yesterday afternoon.  He was fearful of the unknown and Steve had to hold him down for the anesthesiologist to put the mask to his face.  Hopefully, next time he will remember and be comforted that nothing hurts and the surgery is quite easy for him.  He fears any needles (pokes) or sticky monitors on his chest.  It all passes quickly and we are very aware that many others in the Pediatric Surgery area have much more serious/chronic conditions being treated.  We wish we could help those parents in the midst of their fear for their children.  Smiles and prayer is all we can offer.

Once the surgeon removed the stent, he sent dye up into the kidney and X-rayed the area.  It was determined that there was some leakage of dye behind the lower portion of his kidney.  Therefore, the surgeon replaced the stent with a new one and we will return again in four weeks to do the same procedure.  At that time if the kidney still has some areas of leakage we will have to figure that out.

It was a little disappointing at first to know Isaiah would have to return, but we aren't too surprised that his kidney is not repaired at this time.  It has only been about six weeks since the accident.  He was diagnosed and treated for a Grade 5 kidney laceration, which 5 is the most severe injury.  It will simply take time.

In the meantime, we will continue to help him take things easy.  He will return to school next week and spend a couple of hours there until returning home for rest.  He has to avoid recess and Phy-Ed type activities for a little while longer to avoid a fall or bump to the back or side.  He is doing great and life is good!  We continue to enjoy our extra time together hanging out!

Last night when Steve helped him use the restroom, as Isaiah crawled back in bed, he said, "Tomorrow is Valentine's Day! Dad, you're my Valentine even though you are stinky."  Kids are fun and we are blessed.
Isaiah looked forward to a "slushy" party in recover with his sisters.  After they waited for six hours to see him again, they were excited too!
Once Isaiah woke completely from anesthesia he immediately wanted to eat...tacos and egg rolls.  Since he couldn't have those yet, he devoured graham crackers, popsicles and Nilla Waffers.  We were laughing at how fast he was eating!

  1. We appreciate hearing how Isaiah's surgery went. I know it can seem frustrating when things aren't as far along in the healing process as we'd like, but Isaiah is truly doing amazing. We continue to keep you all in our thoughts and prayers! Hope you have fun going back to school, Isaiah!! I'm glad you enjoyed your snacks and slushys after your surgery. You have such a great supportive family! Hope you had a nice Valentines Day! Love, the Brodys
